Being Well Rounded

I have spent over 23 years taking college classes. Starting off first in community college and dropping out, and then going back, then transferring to university level all in business. After taking my first computer programming class I decided a degree in Management Information Systems wasn't for me, so I switched to general business. I ended up having to stop for a while and eventually went back to community college and got my Associates in General Business. I finally decided what I wanted to major in for the University level and that was Family Studies and Human Services which meant I had to almost start over. I'm now just three classes away from graduation...the two I'm currently taking and one this fall!! All that being said that I was always super picky on what classes I took. I always took something that truly interested me or that would transfer to almost any degree out there. I've taken paralegal classes, classes that made me a better parent, classes on Holocaust and Human Trafficking, and ones that would help me run a business. I have also had my National Pharmacy Technician Certification and my Real Estate License. I have ran my own small business many times over the years. My mom said the one thing I did really right was that I have a vast skill set and will always be able to take care of my family no matter what. And believe it or not that has always been the goal. Though I never wanted to waste time in a class room learning about something that I didn't love or that wouldn't move me forward in life. I have always considered myself someone who was good at research and loved to do it. That was until I took a legal research class. Even working with a research team a few years ago on human trafficking made me understand research wasn't exactly what I thought it was. There is a lot of work in gathering the information, breaking it down so it can be understood, and then releasing that information to the right people. I helped build a database of all the organizations that work directly with trafficking victims here in the United States. That was a lot of work, and it was also a lot easier than the work the rest of the team did prepping the information gathered so it could be shared at events and in dissertations. College and research isn't for everyone but I encourage those who are interested to select classes and projects that interest them but also stretch them outside their comfort zone a little bit.
